2 Timothy 2:8

Hello, and welcome back to Tabernacle Tidbits. Today, we are in 2nd Timothy, Chapter 2 and verse number 8.

And the Apostle Paul is writing to his son in the faith, Timothy, and he is encouraging him here in Paul's very last letter to continue in his faith, to not give up, to not be ashamed of Jesus or of Paul, not to buckle under the pressures of ministry

and of being a Christian in a day and age in which it was very dangerous to be a Christian as Paul himself knew well. And so Paul tells Timothy this in 2nd Timothy 2 and verse 8, Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and descended from David

according to my gospel. Okay, first he tells Timothy this. He says, I want you to remember Jesus Christ. I want you to keep him in mind.

I want you to think of him. I want you to, one way to phrase this is I want you to keep on mentioning this in your own mind to yourself. Very often, we can rehearse so many things in our head.

We can rehearse the bad things that people have said to us, the clever retorts that we are trying to craft that we would have said back to that person.

We can rehearse in our brain everything that we are nervous about, everything that we're scared about. All of the difficulties that we have up coming. But we need to remember Jesus Christ.

And as we think about Him, as we allow Him to be what consumes our mind, that brings us peace. Because when I remember Jesus, I'm not as concerned about what other people think about me, because I know what Jesus thinks about me.

And so even if someone else doesn't view me as worthy, Jesus thought I was worth enough to die for. If other people don't love me, I know that Jesus loves me with an endless undying love.

And as a result, I can go about my life with the fruit of the Spirit, with God's presence encouraging me, because I know who Jesus is.

And He says, remember Jesus Christ, of course, Jesus, His name, God saves, Jehovah, Yahweh saves, and then Christ, that He is the Messiah. He is the promised one from the descendants of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and Judah and David.

And so we remember God's promises from the past and everything that He said that the Messiah would do in setting this world right. So we remember Jesus Christ, and we remember a couple of things that Paul here says.

He says, number one, he has risen from the dead.

He says, Timothy, if the very worst that this life has to offer you, if all of the worst comes true, and you are arrested by Rome, you are beaten and mocked and killed and crucified and placed into the grave, you will still know that there is hope

ahead of you. Why? Because Jesus Christ died. And so there is nowhere that we can go in this life that Jesus has not first gone before us.

And so it brings us encouragement to know, I'm not alone in this. If I'm experiencing difficulty, if I'm experiencing fear, if I'm experiencing the hatred of others, I know that Jesus has gone through all of this before me.

And so he says, remember that death is not the end that Jesus proved to us that there is a resurrection life that is coming. And if Jesus conquered the grave, then Jesus can conquer everything that I have going in my life.

So he says, remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and descended from David. This was the only genealogy that really mattered. And this will be something that comes up later in Second Timothy.

And we'll see endless genealogies, things that just didn't really matter. And Paul's saying, the only truth that we need to concern ourselves with is Jesus.

Not about rumors, not about vague possibilities of what maybe could have happened or occurred. We need to anchor ourselves to truth. And God's word is truth, and so what is expressly revealed in scripture is what we are to focus on.

And then he says, this is all according to my gospel. Now that's not Paul saying his own personal gospel that he has and other people have their things.

He's saying, no, the gospel that the Lord himself gave to Paul and that was the same gospel that the apostles had, same gospel that all of the early believers had, not like the false teachers, but the one true gospel.

So he tells him, Timothy, remember, set your mind on truth, on the certainty of hope, even in difficulties, and realize that the gospel is what matters, the truth and veracity of scripture, not human thoughts or opinions.

So put your attention on Jesus. Thanks for tuning in. See you next episode.
